Many widows experience moments when grief suddenly rises without warning.
If you have found yourself feeling overwhelmed by emotion at unexpected times, please let me reassure you, you are not alone. These sudden grief waves are a common part of navigating life after loss.
There are moments in grief that feel as though they come from nowhere.
You might be going about your day. Perhaps doing something ordinary.
And then suddenly, without warning, the feeling rises.
A wave of sadness. A tightness in your chest. Tears that seem to appear before you even understand why.
It can feel confusing when this happens.
You may find yourself wondering, “Why now?”
If you have experienced this, please know there is nothing unusual about it
Grief does not move in a straight line.
It comes and goes in its own time, often without warning.
Something small can bring it forward. A memory. A sound. A familiar place. Or sometimes nothing you can clearly identify at all.
Your mind and heart are still processing what has happened, even when you are not consciously thinking about it.
So when the feeling rises, it can feel sudden and overwhelming.
This is not a sign that you are going backwards.
It is simply part of how grief moves.
Over time, many widows begin to discover that grief waves cannot always be avoided.
But they can be met, even when they feel overwhelming. But by slowly learning that it can be met, even when it feels overwhelming.
Sometimes that may simply mean pausing for a moment.
Letting the feeling be there, without trying to push it away.
And reminding yourself, as best you can, that this wave will not stay forever.
And with time, you may begin to trust that you can steady yourself as it rises… and find your way through it when it passes.
Grief has its own rhythm, even when it feels unpredictable.
Be gentle with yourself as you move through each wave.
To New Beginnings,
Ruth ❤️
