Loss doesn’t always leave you alone. Sometimes, it leaves you surrounded by people… and still feeling as though you are on the outside of it all.
There are moments when you are sitting with family, or in a room full of conversation… and something just feels different.
You are there. You are part of it.
And yet…
You don’t quite feel included in the same way.
You may notice it in small, quiet ways.
Being spoken over.
Not quite being listened to.
Or feeling as though your words don’t land as they once did.
Sometimes it can feel as though you are being gently humoured.
As if what you say is heard… but not really taken in.
Or even a subtle sense that you are no longer being seen in quite the same way as before.
And that can leave you feeling more alone than being by yourself.
After loss, something shifts, both within you, and around you.
Your world has changed.
Your thoughts feel deeper.
Your emotions closer to the surface.
Your sense of life… different.
But those around you may still be moving in the same way as before.
Or they may begin to relate to you differently now that you are on your own.
Often this comes from care or concern.
But at times it can feel as though your role has quietly changed… as if others are stepping in, or seeing you as needing more support than you feel you do.
They may not fully see how much has changed for you, or may interpret it completely differently.
So while you are still part of the family… you may no longer feel quite in step with it.
And that quiet gap can feel incredibly frustrating, as well as isolating.
Over time, many widows begin to find small ways of steadying themselves in these moments.
Not by forcing themselves to fit back into what was. And not by trying to explain everything they are feeling.
But by gently recognising what the moment is.
By not taking every response as a reflection of their worth.
And by allowing themselves space when things feel too much.
If you have been feeling this way, you are not imagining it. And you are not becoming less.
You are adjusting to something that has quietly changed your place in the world.
That takes time.
And in the meantime, some moments may feel harder than others.
But you are still you. Still worthy of being heard. Still worthy of being seen.
Even if others don’t always see you in the same way right now.
To New Beginnings,
Ruth ❤️
